Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
