Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of his "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a record of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
