A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national works. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
